Trade Body Voices Concerns over Proposed Ban on Scrap Plastic Export

Time:2019-02-18 17:33 Author:Suny Group

The Recycling Association has issued a statement in protest again the call by UK MPs to implement ban on exports of scrap plastics. The trade body warned that such an action would have adverse impacts on UK recycling.

Simon Ellin , Chief Executive, the Recycling Association stated that the region hosts a lot of legitimate companies that export recyclable plastic packaging to destinations in Europe and Asian region. By doing so, they contribute in sending the material back to the point of manufacture, as part of global circular economy. The products thus shipped are more often used in the manufacture of new products.

The exports to China have stalled since the country imposed ban on imports of scrap plastics. Many other Asian countries too have either banned or imposed strict controls on quality of recyclable imports. To ensure that the recyclable shipments are free of contamination, the local authorities should invest in creating more efficient collection and sorting system domestically, the Association said. Quality products still enjoy huge demand in overseas markets, it reminded. Hence imposing outright ban would only bring in more damages to the U.K recycling industry, it added.

A group of MPs across party lines had recently signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament calling for the ban. The EDM highlighted the fact that many countries that receive the scrap exports were found not having adequate waste management systems. As a result, much of the waste ends up in landfills or is being handled in primitive, unhealthy conditions.
